Music

Strathfield North Public School supports a wide range of opportunities for children to enjoy, learn and participate in music.  The P&C supports the school's programs by offering the children the opportunity to learn band and string instruments and play in the school ensembles, perform at various events and participate in workshops.

The P&C Music Committee currently coordinates the band program for Yrs 3-6 children and string program for Yrs 1-6.

This includes coordinating instrument hire, tutors and the school and conductors for each of the ensembles.

Other opportunities may be available at different times depending on demand.

Instrument Hire

Instruments are available for hire from the school for those children who do not have access to an instrument.  This gives children the opportunity to try an instrument for 6 months without a large investment.

The initial cost to hire includes a $50 security deposit (that is refundable at the end of the hire period) and $60 per Semester (ie. Semester 1= Terms 1 & 2).  Information on how to care for each instrument will be given out at the beginning of the hire.

The hire cost covers servicing and repairs.  Replacement of reeds, cleaning equipment, resin, strings etc are the responsibility of the hirer. A hire agreement must be signed at the start of the hire period that details all the responsibilities.  the instruments are valuable and must be handled carefully.

There is the option to approach a music store for details of hire, purchase or pay as you go programs.

Tuition Fees

All children are expected to have tuition outside the band and orchestra rehearsals.  The P&C Music Committee arranges to teach before  and after school at the school.  The fees vary slightly from about $20-$28 for a half hour private lesson per week.  Group lessons may be negotiated with the tutor be we recommend private lessons.

If the times available at the school are not suitable, you can arrange lessons privately through different music stores such as Strathfield Music Centre, Concord Road; Sax and Woodwind, The Music Place.

It is the parent's/carer's responsibility to arrange lessons directly with the tutor and to supervise your child before and after lessons.  Make sure you are aware of the responsibilities in case of illness and the tutors payment requirements.

Make sure you encourage your child as much as possible. 10 minutes of practice, 4 times a week will make a huge difference.
